Why I love free writing

Hey, it’s Katherine! Do you ever find yourself drawn to write with no clear idea as to where anything is going? It’s an odd feeling it must be said. Free writing is the concept of just writing whatever comes to mind without planning or forethought. It’s an expression of your minds pure imagination and while it might not be the best or most complex stylistic piece of poetry or prose, it can be an excellent jumping off point.

Sometimes it can be nice to free writing for a deeper understanding of your characters. Write something about their childhood or a room description that never makes it into the final story. Or sometimes it can be a way of just opening your mind to new concepts or ideas. I could free write about the colour red if the colour becomes a symbol through a poem.

The important thing to remember about free writing is that it is supposed to be free. Don’t pressure yourself into writing something you are not feeling when you are just searching for ideas. Let your mind wander and take the trail off the beaten path. Find new things and go completely off topic. This is a tool to be used for inspiration not for final work. In all honesty some of the favourite poems that I written were at least in part free writes. I didn’t sit down and plan them out or try and stick to a certain structure. I just let the words flow. And just remember you can always edit later.

So relax and just write. Free writes don’t have to be shared or published or go anywhere. They are your words to keep hold of and change and maybe never use again but just let your pen hit the page and see where the language takes you.

Happy Writing x

Poetry Corner – How to keep your mascara on

Hey, it’s Katherine! This is one of my edited poems from the Writer’s House Course I went on in October. If you would like me to go through the editing process for this poem then leave me a comment. This particular poem was an exercise in list ‘How-to’ poems inspired by Dean Atta’s How to be a poet. I hope you enjoy x

New Series

Hey there, long time no see I know. I promise there will be more content soon. Anyway, I have the first little taste of a new series of posts on some writing workshops I did with METAL which is a creative organisation. I have recently taken part in their writer’s house course and it was phenomenal. We were lead by four extraordinary poets and I will be revealing what they taught me over the next few posts.

I have a little teaser of the first bit of poetry I wrote on the course. Only four lines, but the first four lines of an amazing adventure.

Is it wrong of me to think,

that you so alone, would grip so tight?

How is it that though your mask falls,

and you are so cold, that you would still take flight?

Poetry Corner – To my brother, Jesus Christ

Hey Guys and Girls, it’s Katherine. This one has been quite a hard poem to post. Last week I was confirmed as a member of the Church of England. I have been on an alpha course and over the last couple of months, my faith has grown so enormously. I feel so loved and blessed by the family I have grown in the church and in the friendships that will stay with me all the days of my life. This poem is my ode to the love that I bare for my saviour Jesus Christ and how I can see him at work.

Poetry Corner – Demons

Hey guys, it’s Katherine. I found this poem when I was looking through one of my old school books from when we covered gothic literature. It was fun to write and I think it is always nice to find bits of old writing you can relearn to love. Don’t look too deeply into this one… I might write like this from time to time but these generally aren’t thoughts that cross my mind on a regular basis.

Poetry Corner – In my Life, So Far

Hey guys, it’s your girl Katherine with some hopefully uplifting rhyme in an odd sort of way (life is bad for everyone at times, we might as well laugh about it). From next week it will hopefully start being some of my newer work rather than my old, found pieces because as much as I like to recover old poetry, it is always nice to write the new things too! Anyhow, I thought I would share this with you today enjoy!
